Kaleidoscope String Camp –
Come Play with Us!

Why put your instrument away for the summer? Wittenberg University's Center for Musical Development and The Springfield Symphony Orchestra invite you to keep up with and enhance your skills by participating in the 11th annual Kaleidoscope String Camp. The Kaleidoscope Camp supports students in grades 4 through 9 who are involved in orchestral music programs or private study. Work with and learn from professionals from Wittenberg University's Center for Musical Development and musicians from The Springfield Symphony Orchestra. You will have the chance to show off what you have learned in a student/coach recital and perform in advance of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra for the Summer Arts Festival.

This year's camp promises an exciting five days of fun, friendship, and learning while making music together. We hope to see you there!

The dynamic James Ledbetter is back this year as camp conductor. Mr. Ledbetter is the Music Director of the Springfield Youth Orchestras Program and conductor of the Springfield Youth Symphony. He plays bass in the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, and is the Assistant Orchestra Director for the Kettering City Schools. His leadership skills, enthusiasm, and passion set the tone for a week of musical excellence.

Camp Coaches:

Sujean Kim, Violin
Sujean Kim has been widely praised as a concertmaster, chamber musician, and soloist. The Springfield Symphony concertmaster has performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, but the most vital facet of her career continues to be music education and outreach. With career accomplishments and current endeavors too numerous to mention, Sujean brings considerable experience, charisma, and excitement to this year's camp.

Lesa DeBorde, Violin
Widely known as one of the top string instructors in the area, Lesa is principal 2nd violin with the Springfield Symphony, Adjunct Instructor of Violin at Wittenberg University, and maintains a busy schedule teaching and performing throughout the Miami Valley and beyond. Lesa’s passion for excellence is well-known by her students and past camp participants.

Katie Harford, Violin
Katie Harford is currently the conductor of the Springfield Youth Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Director for the Springfield City Schools, and maintains a private teaching studio as well. She is a section violin with the Springfield Symphony and also performs with various chamber groups in the area. Katie’s spirited approach is an asset to this year's camp.

Dr. Phillip Magnuson, Viola
Phil Magnuson is a Professor of Music at the University of Dayton and principal viola of the Springfield Symphony. Phil is the low strings sectional coach for the Springfield Youth Orchestras Program, and his compositions and arrangements have been performed at many camp recitals, as well as by the Springfield Symphony and various other ensembles. Phil has been a student favorite during all ten seasons of the Camp’s existence.

Pat King, Violin/Viola
Pat King is currently the conductor of the Springfield Youth String Ensemble and section viola with the Springfield Symphony. As an Elementary String Specialist with the Dayton City Schools, Pat brings to the camp considerable experience in working with younger musicians.

Isaac Watras, Cello
Isaac Watras is principal cellist of the Springfield Symphony, general music teacher for St. Aloysius Gonzaga School in Cincinnati, and the director of the Contemporary Performers Workshop. Isaac’s “Improv” class is a student favorite, and he brings an infectious joy and love of music to camp each year.

Camp Directors
Dr. Barb Mackey
Barb Mackey has served as the Director of Community Programs at Wittenberg University since 1981. She is the Director of the Center for Musical Development and the WISE Academic Camp for high achieving middle school students. She received her Ed.D. from Columbia University. Dr. Mackey has taught cello privately for over 30 years, and regularly performs with the TOFT Chamber Group and Kinderoaks Trio, and as a church musician. She also serves on the Education Committee of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra Board. Dr. Mackey’s years of experience and passion for providing a quality educational event for camp participants has been a driving force in the success of the Kaleidoscope String Camp each summer.

Robyn Zimmann
Robyn is the Operations Director of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. Her numerous duties include overseeing the Education Programs of the SSO, including the highly successful Springfield Symphony Youth Orchestras Program. Robyn has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Wittenberg University, and is a member of the SSO horn section. She co-directs the Youth Symphony Woodwind Quintet and Brass Ensemble, and with 8 years of private violin study in her past, she has a remote clue about stringed instruments! Robyn’s administrative skills and long history of working with youth in various settings insure that each student's camp experience will be "well-orchestrated."
