The New Babylon

Hear a young Dimitri Shostakovich as he creates one of the first film scores commissioned to accompany a silent film.  Grigori Kozintsev’s and Leonid Trauberg’s film, The New Babylon, prepared by Marek Pytel, will be presented with this early score that foreshadows the epic voice that Shostakovich would become. The subject is the Paris Commune established in 1871, 150 years ago.

Practice your Patronus Charm as the SSO
explores the music of wizards, from the evil sorcerer who turned Odette into a swan in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, King Kashchei in Stravinsky’s Firebird, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice of Fantasia fame, to the wizarding world of Harry Potter, this program will delight the entire family. Celebrate our educational efforts as the SSO invites the Springfield Youth Symphony and Children’s Choir to join forces in conjuring this magical experience.

Too Hot to Handel

The Kuss will swing like never before as Too Hot to Handel: A Gospel Messiah will usher in the Holiday season.  True to Handel’s original, but with a groove that will have you longing to dance, this popular work combines forces of the SSO, the Springfield Symphony Jazz Orchestra, our Community Gospel Choir, the SSO Chorale, and three amazing vocal artists.

An American in Paris

The SSO welcomes guest conductor, Miriam Burns, and guest artist, Francisco Fullana, in a delightful mashup of French and American styles. George Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Saint Saens’ haunting B minor Violin Concerto make this program a wonderful harbinger of spring.

The Other Tchaikovsky Concerto

The SSO Chorale takes center stage as they explore the music of three iconic composers of the 20th and 21st century: Ralph Vaughan Williams, Morten Lauridsen and John Adams. Settings of Shakespeare, Emily Dickenson, and the liturgy are the annual vehicle for our splendid SSO Chorale. Audience favorite, Spencer Myer, returns to the Kuss to perform “The Other” Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto, No. 2.  This magnificent work spotlights two orchestra stars as well, Concertmaster, Sujean Kim and Principal Cellist, Joe Mueller.

Join us in an exploration of the blues through jazz-from Louis Armstrong through Charles Mingus to Wynton Marsalis. The SSJO will bring back audience favorite, 20-year old vocalist, Christopher McDole, for this soulful evening that will surely blow your blues away!

Ella Fitzgerald: First Lady of Song

“First Lady of Song” will feature Grammy-award winning vocalist Carmen Bradford celebrating the music of one of the most iconic vocalists in history-Ella Fitzgerald. This concert will explore her music over a nearly sixty-year career. The music was hot, inventive, and danceable.  Her vocal stylings, scat singing, and lyric interpretation set a standard that has transformed popular vocalists for more than half a century. One cannot address nearly any form of popular music without studying and being influenced by her extraordinary output. She single-handedly transformed our country’s musical journey.
