Springfield Youth Choir

In 2012, the Springfield Symphony formed a children’s chorus to appear with the orchestra on its 2011-2012 season finale, a performance of Carmina Burana. This successful formation of the chorus also prompted an additional performance with the Springfield Youth Orchestras on the annual John Smarelli Scholarship concert.

The response of the community to these two fantastic performances led the SSO to expand its educational offerings to include a full-time children’s chorus; the newly formed Springfield Youth Choir (SYC).

Under the direction of the dynamic Mrs. Jennifer Wightman, the SYC inaugural season in 2012-2013 featured multiple performances and a festival appearance with the Kettering Children’s Chorus and Con Brio Children’s Chorus of Westerville, as well as singing with the Springfield Symphony Chorale in the Springfield Symphony Orchestra’s season finale performance of Bizet’s Carmen.

The SYC continues to grow and is a great ensemble for young singers. Participating students can look forward to these exciting opportunities:

» Masterclasses and workshops with local and regional vocalists
» Annual holiday caroling at local nursing homes
» Side-by-Side concerts with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra
» Singing the National Anthem at a variety of events, including prior to sporting events, before SSO concerts, and more!
» Performances at local schools and universities
» Musicianship classes with Jennifer Wightman
» Competitions and performances in choral festivals
» Workshops with SSO Chorale Director, Basil Fett
» An annual Choral Invitational event on Wittenberg University’s campus
