TRYOUT
REQUIREMENTS
New Student Tryouts are being held on August 29th from 9:00am - 3:00pm at the John Legend Theater (700 S Limestone St, Springfield, OH 45505).
These auditions will be for both incoming and returning students. For any questions, please reach out to Ashtin Johnson at ashtin@springfieldsym.org
To register for your tryout, please fill out this registration:
SPRINGFIELD YOUTH SYMPHONY (SYS)
​
Open to strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. At least 3 years of playing experience is required. Private lessons are preferred.

Tryout Requirements:
Scales: All students will be asked to demonstrate their tone and intonation with 2 scales. Musicians should be expected to play any scale up to 4 sharps and 4 flats with a 2 octave range.
One solo piece or etude: 1-2 Minutes in length
Sight-reading: All musicians will be asked to demonstrate their reading ability with a short excerpt provided at the time of audition.
Percussion – (1) solo piece or etude on one of the following instruments: snare drum, timpani, or mallet percussion. Demonstrate major scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats on mallet percussion.

ORCHESTRA (SYCO)

Open to strings only. Students must demonstrate a comfortability in reading music.

Scales: All students will be asked to demonstrate their tone and intonation with 2 scales. Musicians should be expected to play 2 octave scales up to 2 sharps and 2 flats.
One solo piece or etude: 1-2 Minutes in length demonstrating skills into 3rd position.
Sight-reading: All musicians will be asked to demonstrate their reading ability with a short excerpt provided at the time of audition.

SPRINGFIELD YOUTH STRING
ENSEMBLE (SYSE)

Open to strings only. This group is for musicians who are able to read music on a beginner level.
​
Returning syse students:
No tryout required.

Scales: All students will be asked to demonstrate their tone and intonation with 2 scales.

Violin – D Major (1 octave) and G Major (2 octaves)
Viola and Cello – D Major (1 octave) and C Major (2 octaves)
Bass – D Major (1 octave) and G Major (1 octave)
One solo piece or etude
Sight-reading: All musicians will be asked to demonstrate their reading ability with a short excerpt provided at the time of audition.

SPRINGFIELD YOUTH CHOIR & CHILDREN'S CHOIRS (SYC & SCC)

NO TRYOUT IS REQUIRED FOR THE CHILDREN'S CHOIR
Youth choir is open to students grades 6–12 after voice change.
Experience singing in a group setting preferred, but not required.
Tryout requirements for new students:
Prepare to sing a common tune. The music for Homeward Bound and America are attached below as options and can be sung in any key. Other tunes are welcome.
