When people think of live jazz in Ohio, they often look toward Dayton or Columbus. What many do not realize is that some of the most exciting, authentic big band jazz in the region is happening right here in Springfield, Ohio.

The Springfield Symphony Jazz Orchestra (SSJO) brings the energy, swing, and soul of jazz to the heart of our community. From classic big band favorites to bold modern arrangements, the SSJO delivers performances that are vibrant, accessible, and unforgettable.

This is jazz that feels alive. It is music you can feel in your chest, tap your feet to, and smile through from the first note to the last.

A Jazz Orchestra with Deep Roots and Big Vision

The Springfield Symphony Jazz Orchestra was founded in 2019 by Todd Stoll, a Springfield native and nationally respected jazz educator. Todd’s vision was simple but powerful. Bring the spirit of America’s music home and create a professional jazz orchestra that reflects the heart and talent of Springfield. Todd Stoll also serves as Vice President of Education at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. His leadership brings world-class experience and passion to every SSJO performance. Under his direction, the orchestra blends tradition with creativity, honoring jazz legends while keeping the sound fresh and exciting.

The result is a jazz orchestra that rivals ensembles found in much larger cities, while remaining rooted in community and connection.

An Intimate Jazz Experience You Will Not Find in Bigger Cities

SSJO performances take place at the John Legend Theater in downtown Springfield. This venue offers an intimate setting where audiences feel close to the music and the musicians.

Every seat feels personal. Every performance feels shared.

Unlike large venues in Dayton or Columbus, the John Legend Theater allows audiences to fully connect with the sound, the rhythm, and the performers on stage. It creates a jazz experience that feels welcoming and engaging, whether you are a longtime jazz fan or attending your very first concert.

Celebrating the Legends and the Joy of Jazz

The Springfield Symphony Jazz Orchestra celebrates the great names of jazz, including Duke Ellington and Count Basie, while also embracing new voices and fresh arrangements. Each concert is filled with swing, style, and storytelling through sound.

From themed performances to special guest appearances, SSJO concerts feel like celebrations. They are lively, joyful, and full of moments that bring people together.

This is music meant to be experienced live. It is music that connects generations and invites everyone to be part of the moment.

A Proud Part of the Springfield Symphony Family

The SSJO is an important part of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra Association. Together, they share a mission to bring high-quality music to the community while supporting education and youth programs.

Proceeds from SSJO performances help support music education and outreach efforts that ensure jazz and classical music continue to thrive in Springfield and throughout the region.

Supporting the SSJO means supporting live music, local talent, and the cultural heartbeat of our city.

Why Travel When the Music Is Here

You do not need to drive to Dayton or Columbus to experience outstanding live jazz. The Springfield Symphony Jazz Orchestra offers performances that stand proudly alongside larger regional ensembles, with the added benefit of a welcoming atmosphere and strong community connection.

This is jazz with heart. Jazz with history. Jazz that belongs to Springfield.
