Springfield Symphony Jazz Orchestra Shines at the Dayton Foundation Annual Meeting

Music has a way of bringing people together, and the Springfield Symphony Jazz Orchestra did just that at the Dayton Foundation Annual Meeting on September 25. The group filled the room with energy, joy, and the unmistakable sound of live jazz.

Led by Todd Stoll, the SSJO took the stage as honored guests and shared the kind of performance that leaves everyone smiling. The evening featured a special appearance by Grammy Award–winning vocalist Carmen Bradford, whose soulful voice lit up the night. Her performance reminded everyone how powerful music can be when it comes straight from the heart.

Carmen Bradford’s story is one of legacy and love for the art of jazz. More than forty years ago, she was discovered by William “Count” Basie, one of the greatest bandleaders in history. She still performs with the Count Basie Orchestra today, carrying on a tradition that continues to inspire musicians around the world. Seeing her perform alongside Springfield’s own jazz musicians was a moment that felt both historic and deeply personal.

The Springfield Symphony Jazz Orchestra began in 2019 when Todd Stoll, a Springfield native and lifelong music educator, decided to bring the sound of jazz home. Todd’s leadership reaches far beyond the local stage. He also serves as Vice President of Education at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, where he helps young musicians learn and grow. That same spirit of education and passion for community is at the heart of every SSJO performance.

The Dayton Foundation event was more than just a concert. It was a celebration of talent, dedication, and community pride. The musicians played with joy and purpose, showing that Springfield is filled with world-class talent. Their music carried the message that you don’t have to travel to Dayton or Columbus to experience an unforgettable performance — the best of live jazz is happening right here at home.

As the last song ended and the applause filled the room, the feeling was clear. Everyone had been part of something special. Nights like this remind us that music can bring people together in ways that words can’t. Ready to experience the Springfield Symphony Jazz Orchestra?
